More than 250, 000 concert goers gathered on Brighton Beach on July 13, 2002, in what was described as the "biggest event the UK has ever seen." The crowd was more than four times the expected size and at the time, doubled Brighton's population. A year earlier, about 40, 000 people attended the first of the Big Beach Boutique events. But in 2002, Fatboy Slim, real name Norman Cook, performed the second of his free open-air concerts on Brighton beach in front of a record breaking crowd. From the first-time ravers, the veterans and the dedicated superfans to the curious locals, it felt like the world went down to Brighton for what would become known as the biggest free party in British history: Fatboy Slim's Big Beach Boutique II. In 2022, Fatboy Slim and Anglo Management are collaborating with BMG to produce a 20th Anniversary celebratory product for those who were there, those who missed out and those that weren't even born yet.

The act with the first arena-sized sound in the electronica movement, the Chemical Brothers united such varying influences as Public Enemy, Cabaret Voltaire, and My Bloody Valentine to create a dance-rock-rap fusion which rivaled the best old-school DJs on their own terms – keeping a crowd of people on the floor by working through any number of groove-oriented styles featuring unmissable samples, from familiar guitar riffs to vocal tags to various sound effects. And when the duo (Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons) decided to supplement their DJ careers by turning their bedrooms into recording studios, they pioneered a style of music (later termed big beat) remarkable for its lack of energy loss from the dancefloor to the radio. Chemical Brothers albums were less collections of songs and more hour-long journeys, chock-full of deep bomb-studded beats, percussive breakdowns, and effects borrowed from a host of sources. All in all, the duo proved one of the few exceptions to the rule that intelligent dance music could never be bombastic or truly satisfying to the seasoned rock fan; it's hardly surprising that they were one of the few dance acts to enjoy simultaneous success in the British/American mainstream and in critical quarters.

The Bourne Identity (2002) revitalized the action genre in thrilling, consequential fashion. Matt Damon’s “Jason Bourne”—an alias for a man with no memory, but a ferocious set of fighting skills—upped the ante for gritty, imaginative, pulse-pounding action as well as emotional depth and sophistication, leading to a hugely successful franchise. The Bourne Identity was directed by Doug Liman, whose background in indie film (Swingers, Go) made him the perfect filmmaker to reinvent the genre. For the score, Liman found a willing partner in John Powell, who had started his career working for Hans Zimmer. But Powell, too, wanted to try something different from his previous action films (Face/Off).

Well you know what they say about stupid questions? So we'll ignore that and tell you instead what's a Funkadelic compilation. Oh yes, 29 tracks - in this case odd is most definitely better than even - of undiluted excessive but somehow beautiful funkiness, courtesy of the seminal Westbound Recordings of George Clinton's funky rock band. George's biggest hits might have come towards the end of the 70s on Warner Brothers, and in the early 80s on Capitol, but he defined what he was all about at the Detroit label in the early to mid 70s. He recorded a series of albums that took rock, soul and funk, blended them with a self mythologizing, drug-fuelled aura, and came out with one of the most influential catalogues in rock'n'roll.

Breakin' Review by Victor W. Valdivia
Though the Breakin' soundtrack has become a quaint period piece since its release, it is still a notable album. It was really the first introduction for many to hip-hop culture and music (however softened and tidied up for mass-market consumption it was) and still stands as a perfect summary of the more commercial elements of electro-dance, electro-funk, and even rap of the era. It may sound rather corny and silly compared to the harder-edged acts of the time (let alone today), but there's no denying that the title cut and "Ain't Nobody" are still enjoyable songs, and will probably bring back many fond memories for those who were around during its release. The album is also notable for the debut performance of Ice-T, who is miles away from "New Jack Hustler" (not to mention "Cop Killer") with the poppy, good-natured "Reckless." It's hardly essential, but a funny rarity nonetheless. For all its flaws, fans who want to learn the roots of hip-hop (or are in the mood for a cute, lighthearted listen) should seek Breakin' out.

Bloom begins with Junkie XL's terrific remix of the Afterglow track "World on Fire." He trashes the hopeful chording of the original nearly completely, instead floating Sarah McLachlan's vocals over a taut guitar line for an addictive mixture of tension and atmosphere…
