Two CDs. Having enjoyed his first major Jamaican hit in 1971 with the ground-breaking single 'Blood And Fire', Winston Holness aka Niney 'The Observer' set about establishing a reputation as one of the island's most accomplished and innovative record producers. Within two years of his breakthrough hit, he had built a strong fan-base both within the land of his birth and in the UK, having issued a series of popular singles featuring himself and a small but impressive roster of local artists that included Big Youth, Max Romeo, Delroy Wilson and U Roy. 'Guess Who's Coming To Dinner' comprises the very best of these works, commencing with Ken Boothe's hugely popular 1973 Jamaican chart-topping version of 'Silver Words'. Other highlights include Delroy Wilson's popular interpretations of 'Halfway Up The Stairs' and 'I Can't Help Myself' while there are also numerous early roots classics, most notably the title track, 'Rasta No Born Ya', 'Nice And Easy', 'Every Natty Want To Go Home'. Including 15 tracks that have remained unavailable on any format since their original release in the 70s, this 2CD collection demonstrates why Niney deserves to be ranked among the finest music makers to have first made their mark on the Jamaican music scene during the most creative period in the long and illustrious history of reggae music.

After years of being incorrectly described as a reggae artist, Eddy Grant responded in 1988 by calling this album File Under Rock. Many assumed that the British singer was a reggae-oriented artist because he wore his hair in dreadlocks, but the truth is that he's essentially a pop-rocker who sometimes incorporates reggae elements. While a few tunes on File Under Rock contain slight reggae touches (including "Harmless Piece of Fun"), this is indeed a pop-rock CD first and foremost. Grant favors lighthearted escapism much of the time, although he brings a more sociopolitical agenda to "Another Riot," "Hostile Country" and the questionable "Say Hello to Fidel," which seems to endorse Cuban communist dictator Fidel Castro. Even at his most political, however, Grant avoids sounding preachy. File Under Rock didn't contain a monster hit like "Electric Avenue" or "Walking On Sunshine," but it's a decent effort that Grant's followers will want.

This interesting two-disc collection isn't exactly the "roots" of Bob Marley, since it consists of tracks recorded with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry between August 1970 and April 1971 and Marley had been working in and releasing material from Jamaican studios for some ten years by this time, and it isn't even a Marley anthology, really, because there are dozens of tracks here by the likes of Dave Barker, Johnny Lover, Big Youth, Perry's Upsetters, and Marley's fellow Wailers Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh.

Scottish-born singer Jimmy Somerville became a surprise success in the mid-'80s. Instead of being Duran Duran-cute, Jimmy Somerville looked like the average boy next door. Instead of belting out his musical repertoire with a self-conscious urgency to prove himself as a singer (like Rick Astley or George Michael), Somerville possessed a dramatic, piercing falsetto that made the Associates' Billy Mackenzie sound like Tom Waits. But what really made Jimmy Somerville distinctive was his openness about his sexuality. The 1980s was the decade of androgyny, with artists like Annie Lennox, Boy George, and Poison emulating the gender-bending approach of 1970s-era David Bowie. Other performers such as Morrissey and the aforementioned George Michael kept their fans guessing about their sexual orientation.
