Greatest Hits is a compilation album by the British rock band Queen, released worldwide on 26 October 1981. The album consisted of Queen's best-selling singles since their first chart appearance in 1974 with "Seven Seas of Rhye", up to their 1980 hit "Flash" (though in some countries "Under Pressure", the band's 1981 chart-topper with David Bowie, was included). There was no universal track listing or cover art for the album, and each territory's tracks were dependent on what singles had been released there and which were successful.

The latter is a cover of a 1966 single originally by The Loved Ones; INXS later re-recorded this song and released it on the album Kick (October 1987).

Six CD set from the British post-punk band containing albums, singles, sessions, alternate versions and 22 previously unreleased recordings. Theatre of Hate burned briefly but brightly during the first couple of years of the 1980s, leaving behind the seminal Westworld album, a handful of highly regarded Peel sessions and independent hit singles and a then-unreleased second album, Aria Of The Devil. Omens brings together those classic recordings alongside main man Kirk Brandon's Stone In The Rain album (recorded by Brandon and fellow Theatre Of Hate man Stan Stammers and issued in the US as a Theatre Of Hate album), and Yonjuuichi, a band-curated collection of more recent sessions and versions, bringing the Theatre Of Hate story into the present day.

Following their massive 1986 European stadium tour for the A Kind of Magic album, Queen took an extended break. Rumors swirled about an impending breakup, but it turned out the break was brought on by a painful marital divorce for guitarist Brian May (who subsequently battled depression and contemplated suicide), and Freddie Mercury being diagnosed with AIDS. Instead of sinking further into misery, the band regrouped, worked on each other's mental state, and recorded one of their most inspired albums, 1989's The Miracle. Lyrically, the songs tend to reflect on the band's past accomplishments ("Khashoggi's Ship," "Was It All Worth It") as well as the state of the world in the late '80s (the title track, "I Want It All").

'Plays Live' was compiled from live recordings made at four venues across the American Midwest in late 1982. It is effectively a sign-off to the first phase of Peter Gabriel the solo artist. As such, it's a celebration of all that was achieved on that opening quartet of self-titled long-players, while also standing as confirmation that Peter was an engaged and engaging frontman. At the time, all bar one of the tracks would be familiar to the Gabriel completist, the exception being the previously unreleased 'I Go Swimming'. A studio vocal version of the song has still never been released. The touring band captured by the recordings consists of Peter, alongside Jerry Marrotta (drums and percussion), Tony Levin (bass and stick), David Rhodes (guitar) and Larry Fast (synthesizer and piano), whilst the iconic cover image of Peter in 'monkey mask' make-up was taken by long-time collaborator Armando Gallo.

Bob James is a prolific, best-selling, Grammy-winning composer, arranger, producer, and pianist. Along with Grover Washington, Jr., he is known as one of the fathers of smooth and contemporary jazz. His music seamlessly melds genres from bop to pop, from classical to R&B via relatively simple, accessible, and elegant melodies with rich harmonies and multiple sonic textures, often anchored by lithe, funky grooves. In addition to gold- and platinum-selling albums on his own and in various collaborations, he issued four numerically titled albums for CTI in the mid-'70s that successfully melded jazz, pop, and classical styles with sharp arrangements, accessible melodies, and funky grooves. Those four albums are all considered shining examples of early jazz-funk and have been abundantly sampled by hip-hop DJs and producers…

Soul Steppin': '80s Soulful Steppers Review by Thom Jurek
Backbeats Records is strictly a compilation company based in the U.K. whose releases are distributed throughout the European Union at a budget prices. What they do is simply compile collections of dance music by well-known and obscure artists from the disco era to the latter '90s. And for what it’s worth, when it comes to licensing, they do a terrific job, and this set is a case in point. Compiled by Ian Dewhirst, Soul Steppin' collects 14 jams from the disco era – many of them extended 12" versions such as the Dells’ “All About the Paper,” the original 12” mix of the Impressions' “Fan the Fire,” Walter Jackson's lone entry into the period with the killer “Touching in the Dark,” a midtempo romantic stepper done in that killer baritone of his. Dee Dee Sharp turns in “Easy Money,” and Teddy Pendergrass’ slick, funky “You and Me Right Now” is also here. But along with the bigger names are one-offs, tracks by artists that were a hit on the dancefloor but never really went anywhere else, such as Sound Troupe's trippy meld of smooth future funk, Latin rhythms, jazz, and disco strings for “Can You Really See Me.” Also included is Greg Henderson's lone club classic, “Dreamin,” with its Latin congas, Chic-esque handclaps, and Larry Graham-styled bass solo. This set is pure nostalgia to be sure, but it’s a gas from start to finish.

Another of Chet Atkins' attempts to break into the jazz world during his Columbia period, this recording veers well across the line into new age wallowing of the most innocuous kind. At this point in time, when a record opened with soothing ocean waves, followed by a gentle wash of synths, you could pretty much expect the new age to be lapping at your feet throughout. As he has with so many other genres, Atkins displays an instinctive grasp of this feel-good idiom, though he has to hold back his powers of invention to conform to its clichés and repetitions. Yet even amidst the twittering sound effects and electronic drums of "Up in My Treehouse" and the listless treatment of Keith Jarrett's "My Song," Atkins' guitar always exudes dignity.
