Over the last three or four years, Yo-Yo Ma has been exploring the peaks of the cello repertory in a quickly growing series of LPs. Those disks, in turn, have helped establish him not only as one of the finest cellists of his generation… The Kabalevsky…boasts a melancholy central Largo with the kind of long, arching cello line that allows Mr. Ma to display his rich sound.

Otto Klemperer's Mahler is invariably dry-eyed, yet urgent, a valuable corrective to the number of latter-day interpreters who would either self-indulgently wallow in the music's sentiment or, even worse, treat it as pure sonic architecture, as though it were pre-Schoenberg. If this 1967 reading of the Ninth sounds slightly detached by modern standards, if its expressive points seem slightly understated, it is nevertheless deeply engaged and masterfully controlled. Klemperer was beginning to slow down by this point in his career, and the tempos are just a hair on the slow side, especially in the two middle movements. But the old firmness of conception and rocklike steadiness are still there, even in the stormy weather of the Rondo-Burleske.

Johannes Ockeghem is one of the most famous composers of the renaissance and belongs to the most prominent representatives of the Franco-Flemish school. Despite his high reputation during his lifetime we know very little about him. Even the exact year of his birth is still not established. He was at the service of Charles, Duke of Bourbon, and later he became a member of the French royal chapel. His fame is documented by the various laments in both text and music which were written on his death in 1497. As one of the very few composers from the Franco-Flemish school he has never worked in Italy, and this has consequences for the performance practice.

The Moody Blues were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in May 1964. The band initially consisted of drummer Graeme Edge, guitarist and vocalist Denny Laine, keyboardist and vocalist Mike Pinder, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Ray Thomas, and bassist and vocalist Clint Warwick, with Edge being the group's sole continuous member throughout their entire history. Originally part of the British beat and R&B scene of the early–mid 1960s, the band came to prominence with the UK No. 1 and US Top 10 single "Go Now" in late 1964/early 1965. Laine and Warwick left the band by the end of 1966, being replaced by guitarist and vocalist Justin Hayward and bassist and vocalist John Lodge. They embraced the psychedelic rock movement of the latter part of the decade, with their second album, 1967's Days of Future Passed, being a fusion of rock with classical music that established the band as pioneers in the development of art rock and progressive rock. It has been described as a "landmark" and "one of the first successful concept albums".

Recorded and mixed at Rockfield Studios. Originally released in 1987 on Flicknife Records (SHARP 040). This release includes two extra tracks (#12 & #13). Out and Intake is a 1987 (see 1987 in music) live/studio album by the English space rock group Hawkwind. The album is compiled from various sources: studio out-takes from 1982; live recordings from 1982's Choose Your Masques tour; studio out-takes from 1987. Dave Brock stated of the release that "it was bits and pieces we had hanging around, weird things like "Turner Point". Harvey had "Cajun Jinx". It was really just to finance us all and keep the whole thing going". Of the 1987 studio out-takes, there were re-recordings of old tracks: "Ejection" from Robert Calvert's 1974 album Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters, and "Assassins of Allah" (also known as "Hassan-i-Sabbah") from the 1977 album Quark, Strangeness and Charm.

A band who expertly mixed sweet and satisfying melodies with potent guitar crunch, Badfinger were one of the best and most celebrated precursors to the power pop movement of the 1970s. Mentored by the Beatles and signed to their Apple label, Badfinger's best work faintly resembled their patrons, while the guitar work of Pete Ham and Joey Molland gave much of their catalog a hard rock edge that set them apart and 1970's No Dice and 1971's Straight Up showed they knew how to write songs and play them with spirit and energy. They were Apple's most successful act besides the Beatles, but when Apple ran into financial trouble, the group's fortunes took an unfortunate turn, and while 1974's Wish You Were Here (recorded for Warner Bros.) confirmed they still had plenty of great songs left in them, bad luck and predatory business deals took a tragic toll on a great band.

The greatest strength of Oehms Classics' live recording of the Hamburg Staatsoper 2005 production of Mathis der Maler is the supple and dramatic conducting of Simone Young, the Australian general manager of the company. The score contains some of Hindemith's most overtly romantic and emotionally expressive music, as well as some extended passages that sound like academic note-spinning. Young is remarkably successful in accentuating the score's moments of sensuality, such as the opening "Concert of Angels," and manages to keep the dramatic momentum up during the more pedestrian passages. The sound is full, clean, and well balanced for a live opera performance.

Going by this album, Phil Lynott would have had a lot in common with Bob Geldof, with both of them writing songs that strove for memorable hooks and related to growing up in the rough end of Ireland. The Philip Lynott Album has some surprisingly sweet moments, considering Lynott's hard-rocking past with Thin Lizzy. It generated a bona fide European pop hit in a remodeled version of "Yellow Pearl" (co-written by Midge Ure of Ultravox), a sarcastic attack on Asian marketing methods.

The lustrous Chicago blues scene of the 1950s was predominated by great pianists, and Henry Gray was one of the finest. His rolling two-fisted keyboard work graced countless Chicago blues recordings during the '50s for leading labels like Chess and Vee Jay. He recorded on classic sides by Jimmy Reed, Bo Diddley, Little Walter, and Jimmy Rogers, among others. Starting in 1956, Henry spent twelve years as pianist for the legendary Howlin' Wolf. The sessions for Lucky Man, his first solo American album, were recorded in 1988, and marked something of a comeback for Henry, who had recorded only sporadically in the previous two decades. Audio magazine said that on the album, "Gray performs as if the heyday of Chicago blues never ended."
