Super-virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin plays two of the lushest products of late Romanticism. The Marx concerto, long awaited by pianophiles the world over, is a first recording. Written in the 1930s, it is perhaps closest in style to Richard Strauss with its gushing melodies and rich orchestration.

The music of Austrian composer Joseph Marx (1882-1964) largely fell out of public favor very early in his career, after the First World War, but he continued to compose in the same lushly late-Romantic idiom throughout his long life. A significant part of his work consists of songs and because of that and because of their shared interest in some of the same poets, he is sometimes compared with Hugo Wolf, over 20 years his senior, but his music is closer to the harmonic conservatism of his friend Erich Wolfgang Korngold, whose European career also went into eclipse in the wake of the war.

Joseph Marx was and is a unique one-man occurrence in Austrian music history, a composer of lavishly, sumptuously, and opulently set orchestral music as well as of tender piano songs with an impressionistic touch. His principal strengths lay in both genres; he was a declared lyricist who was not drawn very much to the dramatic mode – a diagnosis corroborated by the fact that he did not compose a single opera. Marx spent his youth in the southern Styrian natural landscape and – as the grandson of an Italian grandmother – on romantic country estates in Italy.
