While not strictly classifiable in the traditions of Tin Pan Alley (á la Berlin or Jerome Kern, his later influence) or operetta (á la Victor Herbert), pianist-composer and producer Vincent ‘Millie’ Youmans is nonetheless rated a highly talented and original songwriter – if an indifferent producer andhopeless businessman. He was born in New York on 27th September 1898 and his father, a milliner by trade, hoped that his son would follow him into that trade.
