Petro Torri is one of the least known and at the same time best composers which lived at the Münich Palace. Around 1665 he was born in Peschiera by the Gardasee. His musical education is unknown. Until his death in 1732 he composed for the Wittelbachischen noble house. After the defeat at the battle of Höchstadt 1704 Torri moved to Brussels and there he worked as "maître de chapelle" at the church of St. Gundule, after the invasion of Brussels by the English 1706, Max Emanuelle fled. After the armistice of Rastatt (1714) Torri started composing again of which the cantata "Le triomphe de la paix" was the product. Beside this piece in the French style the recording also includes "Magnificat à 15 et più" and "Veniat dilectus meus".

When in 2003 the 250th anniversary of the Residenz-Theater in Munich was to celebrated, it was decided to perform the same opera which was performed at the opening of the theatre in 1753: Catone in Utica by Giovanni Battista Ferrandini. That was a bold decision, as Ferrandini is not exactly a household name in our time. He isn't a completely unknown quantity, though; his lamento 'Pianto di Madonna' was once attributed to Handel. It is perhaps due to this misattribution that it was ever recorded.

Francesco Bartolomeo Conti (1682-1732) left his hometown Florence, in which he had already been a lute player under Kardinals Francesco Maria de Medici in his teens, with 19 he applied to the royal palace of Austria. He also worked in Bernlin, where he met Giovanni Bononcini, and London. 1708 Conti became royal theorbe player in Vienna, from 1713 he was royal composer, writing operas, oratories, cantatas, Musicae sacrae, and a few instrumental pieces. Both as a instrumentalist and composer Conti was able to succeed. Sadly today he still is one of the big unresearched composers.

Regarded in his day as equal to Handel and Telemann, Reinhard Keiser composed more than one hundred operas, of which Fredegund , set partly in German and partly in Italian, was one of the most popular. It explores the politically volatile relationships between the sixth century Frankish king, Chilperich, whose ambitious mistress Fredegunda is prepared to use magic to become his queen, although Chilperich is betrothed to Princess Galsuinde and Fredegunda also has a secret relationship with Langerich. This important and entertaining German Baroque opera abounds in melodious, often ravishingly orchestrated, music.

Benedotto Marcellos Oratorium ›Joaz‹ bescherte zweieinhalb Stunden hochdramatischer, intelligenter, spannender und differenzierter Barockmusik, deren Schönheit alle Anwesenden restlos in ihren Bann schlug. […]
