A celebration of the Royal Philharmonic Society's 175th Season as 'An Evening with the Philharmonic' with music from concerts recreating original programmes between 1813 and 1837.

Neukomm spent twenty years in the service of Prince Talleyrand, who commissioned him to write a requiem mass in memory of Louis XVI, guillotined in Paris on 21 January 1793. is was the second mass of the y he was eventually to compose, several of which were dedi- cated to monarchs. e Requiem was given at St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna on 21 January 1815 by more than three hundred singers divided into two choirs. Neukomm conducted one of them, while the other was directed by his friend Salieri.

Jahrhunderts hat so viele ehrenvolle Kompositionsaufträge zu festlichen staatlichen oder gesellschaftlichen Anlässen erhalten wie der gebürtige Salzburger Sigismund Neukomm. Im zeitlichen Zusammenhang mit dem Wiener Kongress 1814/15 war er es (und nicht etwa Beethoven), der 1815 beauftragt wurde, das Requiem zum Gedenken des 1793 auf dem Schafott hingerichteten Königs Ludwig XVI. zu komponieren. Neukomm (und nicht etwa Cherubini) war ebenfalls der Verfasser des Te Deum, das 1814 in Notre Dame von Paris beim festlichen Einzug von König Ludwig XVIII. erklang.

The version submitted by Howard Arman for the Bavarian Radio Chorus is based on surviving Mozart sources as well as on Süßmayr's additions; in several places, however, it reaches new conclusions that are implemented with due caution and humble respect for Mozart's magnificent original. Mozart's Requiem is followed by Neukomm's Respond Libera me, Domine - and for musical, liturgical and chronological reasons, the programme begins with Mozart's Vesperae solennes de Confessore KV 339 (1780), composed of psalms from the Old Testament as well as the Magnificat from the Gospel of St Luke and composed for the liturgical festival of a holy confessor.

Sigismund Neukomm (1778-1858) was one of the most remarkable characters of the music scene in the classical and early romantic era. He started as a pupil of Johann Michael Haydn, and later had close ties with his older Joseph Haydn. During his life he came into contact with almost every composer of fame. He travelled throughout Europe, but didn't stay very long at one place. It is assumed he has written about 2,000 works. Among them are 50 masses, three funeral services and four Requiems.
