This recording features concertos for oboe and its alto cousin, oboe d'amore, by Bach and Telemann. The Bach concertos are reconstructed from published harpsichord concertos that Bach is believed to have originally written for oboe and oboe d'amore. The Telemann concertos for these instruments exist in manuscript form.
It's well known that Bach's set of 13 harpsichord concertos (BWV1052-1065) from his Leipzig period were mostly transcriptions of concertos originally written for other instruments, such as the violin, flute, or oboe, and were transcribed for performances at the Collegium Musicum, a student society overseen by Bach. Some of these concertos exist in the original as well as harpsichord versions, other original versions have been lost. This CD contains two concertos, BWV 1053 in F and BWV 1055 in A, where the presumed oboe originals have been reconstructed. While these reconstructed concertos may not be exactly what Bach wrote, they're likely very close to the lost originals. Each is in three movements, similar to the Brandenburg concertos, and each contains a beautiful slow movement in the Siciliano style.
Telemann composed several oboe concertos and several as well for the oboe d'amore. Although Telemann was assiduous about getting his compositions published, the two concertos on this disk were left by him as manuscripts. Unlike Bach, Telemann's concertos have four movements: slow, fast, slow, fast. The D-minor oboe concerto is very short, with musical ideas that are barely developed. The G-major for oboe d'amore is a more ambitious work that, while still using Baroque ritornello construction, introduces ideas that are in the melodic galant style that was to become dominant in the later 18th Century.
Oboist Paul Goodwin performs these concertos beautifully on reproductions of Baroque period instruments. The Bach concertos especially have rapid scale and arpeggio passages, and Goodwin handles them all with dexterity. The mellower sound of these Baroque instruments is gorgeous and less nasal sounding than modern instruments. The Kings's Consort, consisting of five string players under the direction of Robert King (on the harpsichord), uses period instruments or reproductions and provides sensitive accompaniment. The Consort uses middle A of 415 and a Baroque period temperament attributed to Vallarti and possibly used by Bach and Telemann. The recording was made in 1987, but this Hyperion edition was issued in 2007 and has super sound. The liner notes give detailed descriptions of the compositions and identify the Consort players and their period instruments.
