For several years, decades in fact, a lost gem issued originally not just in the US but in the UK as well (and our vinyl pressings were always much better than their US counterparts), on Chrysalis records who, for a while, had some very good material in this genre, for example the two Auracle albums (and wouldn't lots of us like to get those on CD). But finally it's now reappeared on CD and how very nice it is to be reacquainted with it in that format.

Anyway, this album ~ his second, as far as I know ~ features a host of jazz luminaries of the day (Hancock, Erskine, Pastorius, Carlton, Ritenour, Gadd, etc.) and its only failing is its mildly raw upper registers, though thankfully there are no vocals to pollute the proceedings and Jaco Pastorius' electric bass work is of truly sterling calibre. On this album, if anywhere, you can hear why he was held in such very high esteem by his contemporaries.

Though recorded in LA (where the poor fellow died of cancer in 2004), the sound isn't quintessentially West Coast or East Coast or reminiscent of anywhere in particular. It's just musically great and nothing quite like anything else in my collection or indeed like anything else I've ever managed to hear by Michel Colombier, whilst the LSO on a few tracks (recorded remotely in Wembley, England) is a nice touch as well. All his subsequent material seems to have been for films (e.g. Deep Cover) and is very different from this (which is not a soundtrack). It's all very classy stuff and the more I listen to it the more it seems to be quintessentially of its era and genre, an album which I imagine those involved in its making will remember with great fondness as something quite special. It most certainly is not just another smooth jazz or jazz fusion album. Perhaps the best way to describe it is a skilful blend of fusion jazz and classical, with hints of rock and pop here and there.

The CD reissue is about as straight a transcription of the original analogue as they come (the other such example being John Klemmer's Brazilia). Basically, it's just like the record with no surface noise. Great ~ I still love it to bits (forgive the pun) after (good heavens) now 30 years, but it's not the sort of thing you'd play to try to convert a non-believer. Then again…………..who gives a toss about that?

And now, following several years of having been difficult to find and expensive too, it's out again on CD at a very reasonable price, so snap it up and add a real gem to your collection.

Review by Julian Stevens, Amazon.co.uk

Never Thought I'd Hear It Again. Every music shop I visited and searched through in Europe, Australia and New Zealand failed to come up with the c.d of "Michel Colombier" so i could not beleive my goodfortune when i spotted it on Amazon. This is truly one of the best melodic jazz/quasi classical albums ever. When you pick a cd of the best musicians in the world you know their performance will be great but what is unknown is the quality of the compositions. Michel Colombier has some of the best musicians in the world recording marvelous compositions. In particular Jaco Pastorius plays with such sensitivity and note choice on the tracks Dreamland and Birdsong that one is left in a complete state of calm. This cd also features the great skills of Larry Carlton, Peter Erskin, Steve Gadd, Herbie Hancock, Lee Ritenour, Tom Scott,Michael Rrecker and the London Symphony Orchestra. Anyone who is a fan of this group of performers should, without question, buy this c.d even if the track previews are unavailable.
