All the promise that Lonnie Brooks possessed was realized on this album, his finest and most consistent to date. The churning bayou groove of "Voodoo Daddy," and a soul-steeped "Watch What You Got," a bone-chilling remake of Junior Parker's "In the Dark," rollicking covers of Tommy Tucker's "Alimony" and Brooks' own "Figure Head," and the swaggering originals "You Know What My Body Needs" and "Watchdog" are among the set's many incendiary highlights.

More energetic efforts with a decidedly rocked-up edge. Johnny Winter, long an ardent admirer of Brooks back to the Guitar Junior days, drops by with a passel of fiery guitar licks for the title track and "Got Lucky Last Night."

The hook on this 1986 album is having Brooks and onetime idolator Johnny Winter knock heads on two rave-ups. Elsewhere it's business as usual. His working band chugs along with the tireless determination of a Lafayette-Chicago locomotive, and the man at the throttle unleashes guitar solos that merge West Side blues and rock 'n' roll.

Lonnie Brooks is a performer who has to be seen to be fully appreciated. That said, this album is as close to the live performance as any of his recorded material.

Like it or not, Chicago Blues is a southern import that has been treated to the howling wind and frozen streets of our lakeside home. Lonnie brings a blues, a south of Beale St. Blues, a Texas/Louisianna blues to the barbeque shacks of Chicago's southside. This album is the anthem for the genre.

I have seen Lonnie live countless times, and talked with him recently. In his early 60's the man is passionate about what he does and he remains amazing. His live perfromances have retained some of the staples from this album, but a maturity and a smoky flavor has crept in. Not bad, just different. "Wound Up Tight" returns us to the uncooked, hungrier, less expensive amplifier days where Lonnie was established, but not yet a statesman. Mix in classically trained Ocee Anderson and "Illustrated Man" Johnny Winter on featured guitars, and it's quite a party.

Be prepared to want to add more of this to your collection.

If you're looking for a starting place for Lonnie Brooks, this isn't it. The basic band of Brooks, Tom Giblin on keyboards, Augustus Taylor on Bass and Kevin Mitchell on drums work hard to hold it all together but there are two main problems. Firstly Ronnie Baker Brookes muscles in on the action, and he's nothing like as good as Dad. Secondly the songs, particularly the Brooks' efforts are pretty forgettable. The best tracks on the album are are "Temporary Insanity" and Denise La Salles "It's lying time again". The only dual composition that works is "If the price is right" and that's because Koko Taylor takes the vocals. Buy the others first!

Well, yes, assuming tried-and-true blues rock with a pinch of Tabasco is your passion. His son Ronnie now helps out on guitar, and Koko Taylor has been enlisted to jolt the good times into "If the Price Is Right."

Only intermittently satisfying, contrary to its title: a little more subtlety would have benefitted drummer Kevin Mitchell, and some of the material is a bit makeweight. Nevertheless, there are some nice moments, especially on the tunes Brooks penned himself. "Like Father, like Son," the duet between Lonnie and son Ronnie, seems a mite contrived.

Deluxe Edition rounds up 15 highlights from Lonnie Brooks' late-'70s and '80s recordings for Alligator. Like many Alligator artists, Brooks made records that were just a little too slick to demonstrate the depth of his talents and the grittiness of his playing, yet they still remained solid, rock-inflected contemporary blues albums. The bulk of the highlights from his records are here, making it a fine introduction to Brooks' most popular recordings.

Louisiana-born and Texas-toughened, Brooks (66 at the time of this recording), Hunter (68), and Walker (62) show what blues peers can do in what seem to be peaking years. There are three numbers where all three go full-tilt; the rest of the material varies in personnel, group, and solo emphasis. The distinctive, gutsy voice of Brooks, Walker's loping guitar lines with his slightly rough, seasoned voice, and the riveting presence of Walker on all counts, musically and vocally, are showcased to consistently satisfying levels. Of the 15 cuts, there are a handful of rockers and boogies, a few pure soul tunes and ballads, a jump blues, a Cajun calypso, and some straight blues – something for everyone. The hard-swinging "Street Walking Woman" and the slower shuffle "Feel Good Doin' Bad" are great musically, if lacking in message. Walker gets a back-to-back showcase on "I Can't Stand It No More/I Met the Blues in Person," and he tears it up. Brooks pleads and shouts on "This Should Go on Forever," while Hunter's highlights are the cautious "Alligators Around My Door" and the B.B. King cop on "Quit My Baby." Score some plus points for Kaz Kazanoff's sax and harp playing, and the horn charts are mighty fine throughout. Speaking of unsung heroes and heroines, credit pianist Marcia Ball on three cuts, Riley Osbourn playing keys on the others, and Ervin Charles, who does yeoman-like vocal and guitar work and gets two showcase cuts on his own, the best being the Muddy Waters closer "Two Trains Running." This is a historic joining of three blues legends, with so much talent you have to give huge props. Also, buy this simply for Bruce Iglauer's info-laden song notes, alone worth the price of the CD.

Sometimes guitar showdowns work, and sometimes they don't. Lone Star Shootout definitely does, as three veteran Gulf Coast bluesmen band together for 15 killer tracks, with a little help from their friends. Lonnie Brooks, Phillip Walker, and Long John Hunter play with all the confidence one would expect of musicians who honed their skills in venues that make that country bar from The Blues Brothers look tame. Shootout is an appealing mix of Texas, Chicago (Brooks in particular has spent a lot of time there), and Cajun country (check out "Bon Ton Roulet," and recall that both Brooks and Walker did a stint with zydeco master Clifton Chenier), with nice touches of tenderness ("This Should Go On Forever") and humor ("It's Mighty Crazy"). Overall, a good time is had by all.
