A fascinating collection of German harpsichord music from one of the instruments finest exponents, Sophie Yates.

The German composer Johann Jacob Froberger is the central figure in this collection and he was probably the most significant influence in the development of a distinctive, German style of writing for keyboard instruments. He wrote some twenty-five toccatas of which the two on this album are of very different character; the earlier one is very contrapuntal in style and makes use of a chromatic theme, whilst the other is written in a feer, more improvisatory style, and is harmonically very daring. Sophie Yates writes in her sleeve notes that she wished to include some of the darker more sensual suites, of which the C minor Suite is one of the most striking. Froberger is a colourful composer, and these varied suites, consisting of the usual dance numbers of the day, are most enjoyable.

Johann Kaspar Kerll was similarly an innovator and is represented on this album by an impressive Passacaglia which places great demands on the player, Johann Pachelbel is probably most famous as a composer of sacred works and, of course, the ubiquitous Canon in D. Of his instrumental music, the Hexachordum Apollinis is his most well-known work, which comprises a set of six arias with variations, of which the last one is recorded here. George Böhm is best remembered for his influence on other composers, particularly J S BAch. The Suite on this album is a good example of Böhm’s style, which mixes both French and Italian influences. George Muffat’s Passacaglia dates from 1690 and embodies both French and Italian styles, although the freedom and inventiveness with which he treats his material is distinctly Italianate.

So far, Sophie Yates’s discography on Chandos has, for the most part, steered admirably clear of single-composer discs, preferring instead to drop in on the harpsichord repertoires of France (11/93), Iberia (11/94), England (12/95) and Italy (9/97) respectively. Now it is Germany’s turn. Froberger dominates the selection, and deservedly so; his emotionally sensitive harpsichord music is surely the most interesting and enduring to have emerged from his country before Bach, and in his superb Tombeau fait a Paris sur le mort de Monsieur Blancheroche he approaches real greatness. Yates’s choice of pieces deliberately emphasizes his famously melancholy side, an emotional atmosphere which she extends to the rest of the disc by picking mainly minor-key music. That does not mean, however, that this recital is a dreary one; rather, it shows just how beautiful – in its earnest and rather complex way – German seventeenth-century music can be, while at the same time offering a few virtuoso fireworks in the three big pieces by Pachelbel, Muffat and Kerll. Ironically it is in these that Yates performs best, for hers is a neat, strongly controlled technique which can fire off internal trills and swirling left-hand passagework with impressive precision.

The Froberger pieces, by comparison, are less successful. Yates is not naturally adventurous with rubato and phrasing, and while she can drive a passacaglia onwards and let the repetitions create their own momentum, in music as eloquent as a Froberger suite she seems to miss some of the music’s powerful rhetorical qualities. I also found the gigues and courantes a little laboured. On balance, this is a disc well worth having for rare music played by an exceptionally competent performer. But when it comes to Froberger, the competition is tough'

Review by Lindsay Kemp, Gramophone

This is a very fine disc of harpsichord music, principally by Froberger but interspersed with pieces by Pachelbel, Muffat and others. It has, as the title suggests, a slightly melancholy air because the pieces here are largely to do with lamentation, but it never becomes dismal or oppressive and much of it is very beautiful.

The music is typical of its time, with a slightly improvisatory feel and Sophie Yates gets this exactly right, I think. She preserves an excellent balance between maintaining the structure of the music and rhythmic freedom and ornamentation, and this makes for a really good performance. She is a terrific harpsichordist, and this is one of her best discs, in my view.

The recorded sound is brilliant, and the sound of Yates's harpsichord is simply lovely. It is resonant and ringing, with no trace of the harsh clattering which mars some harpsichord recordings. The notes are full and interesting, the presentation is attractive and this is a really good disc all round. I love it and recommend it very warmly.
