Refugee - Burning From The Inside Out (1987) {W. Germany for USA}
Refugee’s “Burning From The Inside Out” is without doubt one of the finest albums ever recorded, and proves this with every spin. The second release from this classic AOR band is a really good one. They have a style of their own, but after a few listening you’ll be hooked. The overall quality of the songs is better and the performances are fingerlickin’ good with stellar guitar parts from Rob Kennedy (Myles Hunter, Robert Louden) and equally impressive keyboards from Howard Helm (Millenium, Zon, Cryptic Vision), which is precise and perfectly timed. The drum mix balanced superbly thanks to great work of Brian Doerner (Helix, Rob Moratti) while on bass we meet Martin Jones. Count to that the excellent vocals of Myles Hunter and nothing can go wrong. Pat Glasser’s (Night Ranger, Giuffria, 7 Wishes) powerful and crisp production is futhermore uplifted by an excellent mastering, giving the album the perfect punch to knock you out instantly. Filled with nine songs full of catchy hooks and harmony vocals, it’s a pleasure listening to this album from start to finish. Refugee immediately makes clear their intentions with band’s acclaimed opening track “Survival In The Western World” where except the great keyboard intro is by far one of rock’s finest tunes recorded and has survived the test of time with glance. Excellent craftsmanship combined with skilled writing abilities and a fine tuned feeling for emotion, melody and drama, lasting throughout the entire album. Pompus and keyboard driven magic. We’re talking 1987 here, as if it just passed by. The mid tempo “The Beauty Of Pain” with its great melody and the remarkable pomp rocker “Love Survives” take us further down memory lane. Just listen the intro in “Love Survives” and the catchy chorus and you will be hooked. “Lay Me Down” is the unmistakable power ballad, Warm and honest, almost timidly piano work and soaring vocal work, slowly building up towards the mighty chorus. The album’s titled song “Burning From The Inside Out” is a great rockin’ tune where Myles Hunter’s vocal is so magnificent, soulful and powerful while Rob Kennedy’s guitars are fine with great soloing all over but never tilting over the top and in the same vein is “Power” with a great guitar solo in the middle. “Keep The Lion In The Cage” is a short percussion filled tune which showcases Brian Doerner’s great playing. Even though the song is standing out within all this pompous power, but also showcases the other side to Refugee’s qualities. The keyboard driven “American Dream” is another gem with its ear mingling chorus while on taunting slow mover “Violence”, the guitars propel is in harmony with swirling ominous keys, topped by vocals switching between Hunter and Jones. All of the songs are listenable, and I for one have put this album on over and over again. Any AOR fan out there that can find this album, get it!
