Erich Wolfgang Korngold is best known for the scores to Captain Blood and other films he wrote in Hollywood after fleeing Nazism in the mid-1930s, but he was also a composer of concert music earlier (and later) in his career. This music was forgotten under the modernist regime but has been revived to great success. Korngold's chamber music, though, still qualifies as neglected, and this superb recording of the composer's Piano Quintet in E major, Op. 15 and String Quartet No. 2 in E flat major, Op. 26, plus a rediscovered string quartet version of his popular incidental music for Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, has been successful right out of the box. The general line on Korngold's concert music is that he represented the musical last gap of old Vienna. His music certainly has this aspect, and tonally, it is late Romantic in its orientation, but in its structures, it is not derivative of Strauss or anyone else, and it's a bit misleading to call it conservative. A form is often moved along by alterations in the tempo, an entirely modern idea. The new Eusebius Quartet has an especially keen ear for the ways in which these works are modern. Listen to the exquisite treatment of the last pages of the String Quartet No. 2's first movement. The waltz finale of that work is not an evocation of old Vienna but is closer in spirit to Ravel's nervous La Valse. The group has a fine lyrical sense in Korngold's great tunes, one of which is new here: the transcription for string quartet of the Much Ado About Nothing music (made because the orchestral musicians engaged to play the original had to go back to their regular jobs) originally lacked the Intermezzo, but the Eusebius musicians commissioned one from pianist Tom Poster. The sudden appearance of the piano is a bit surprising, but what a melody it is! A small fly in the ointment is the sound; the String Quartet No. 2 was recorded in an auditorium at London's St. Paul School that is a lurch from the earlier Menuhin Hall ambiance and is too remote. Nevertheless, this recording deserves a place on any shelf or hard drive.
