Carl Stamitz (1745-1805) - with his father Johann Wenzel aka Jan Vaclav and his brother Anton one of the founders and developers of the so-called "Mannheim School", so essential in the growth of the classical symphony - belongs to that throng of composers from the classical era that my have met with great success and popularity during their lifetime, but are now viewed as "minor" ones, dwarfed by the shadows of Haydn and Mozart, and then Beethoven.
But what is it that makes Mozart and Haydn "major" composers and all those others "minor" ones ? Probably, that the latter didn't compose Don Giovanni, Nozze, The Magic Flute, the Requiem, the Clarinet Quintet and Concerto and Symphonies 35 to 41, or 104 Symphonies or The Seasons or The Creation, and a few string quartets and quintets to boot - meaning: Mozart's and Haydn's great masterpieces. But the wind compositions played by Consortium Classicum - three Octets and two "Parthias"/Partitas - are delightful works, in no way inferior to the "minor" works of Haydn and Mozart (if anything written by Haydn and Mozart can be considered "minor"). The Allegros are spirited, lively and merry as Finales from Mozart operas, and the andantes are full of pathos without ever being sentimental. The Parthia in E flat starts with a short "hunting-horn" movement of exhilarating effect. This is rarely "profund" music - and they are "divertimentos" after all -, but it is always lively and entertaining.
What makes a composer a "minor" one in the eyes of posterity? Another factor proper to Stamitz is that his life was spent as a traveling musician, and most of his compositions are in the form of manuscripts scattered around the libraries and remot archives of Europe. The five works performed here have been rediscovered by Dieter Klöcker on his numerous "journeys through the Untied States, Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, Scandinavia, Southern Germany and Austria". He also wrote the enthusiastic liner notes.
