Exactly 20 years ago, Avril Lavigne launched her career as a 17-year-old "skater girl" and conquered the music world from Canada. Her debut "Let Go" became the best-selling album by a Canadian artist in the 21st century and earned her the title of "Pop Punk Queen." Six albums later, the 37-year-old has long been one of the stars of pop rock: "Love Sux" is the name of her new album for 2022, which will be released by Travis Barker's DTA Records.

Following the release of her latest studio album, 2019's Head Above Water, Lavigne began working directly on new material. In December 2020, she announced that she would be recording new music with producers John Feldmann, Mod Sun, Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly. Twelve songs eventually emerged, including a few collaborations. They include her longtime pal, the aforementioned producer and rapper Machine Gun Kelly on the track "Bois Lie," Blink-182 bassist and singer Mark Hoppus on the song "All I Wanted" and producer and songwriter Blackbear on "Love It When You Hate Me," which, following the single "Bite Me" in November 2021, was released in January as the second taste of "Love Sux."

The three songs show the singer going back to her pop-punk roots on the album. In fact, the album is the most alternative record she's ever made, as she revealed in an interview with American magazine Entertainment Weekly: "The people I worked with really understood me and come from that genre of music, […] I felt like I only had to work with people I knew or who fit my vibe. […] In a weird way, I felt like I went back to high school when I was with the people I grew up with, and it was just effortless," Avril Lavigne says. Continue reading
