Swedish singer Miah Persson throws her hat into the lyric soprano ring with Sempre Libera, a selection of arias to showcase her talents, recorded live in concert. She has a sweet voice, though not saccharine, and an assured technique. Like Tebaldi, her trill is not her strength (though, unlike that soprano, at least she includes them). However the voice never opens up at the top, where it remains quite polite, and her coloratura, though fluent, is not scintillating.

Messiaen, who was an enthusiastic and accomplished ornithologist, investigated for his Catalogue d'oiseaux 13 birds with their songs and their specific sound environments. "I'm very attracted by the works of Messiaen. Catalogue d'oiseaux offers a new musical language. Each bird is evoked by his singing, his travels in its environment, the surrounding landscape etc. The music changes depending on whether the bird is found in the air of morning or evening, or depending on the weather. A pivotal album not only in John Coltrane's career but also in the evolution of jazz, the adventurous 1966 outing "Ascension" consists of a single, 40-minute long composition split over the two sides of the original vinyl. Coltrane is part of a seven-piece horn section (which includes Freddie Hubbard) with McCoy Tyner on piano, Art Davis and Jimmy Garrison on bass and drummer Elvin Jones. This release includes both takes recorded by Coltrane and his musicians, known as "Edition I" and "Edition II", previously available individually.

Janos Starker was one of the 20th century's best cellists, known for his warmth and expression, as well as a thorough knowledge of the instrument. On these historic recordings, Starker delivers Bach’s six suites for solo cello and sonatas with technical expertise and authenticity. Accompanied by pianist György Sebök, this re-release is captured with the pristine sound associated with the Mercury Living Presence series.

This release includes Herbie Hancock's music from 1969-1971 for the Warner Brothers label, released originally as three albums, one of Herbie Hancock's most creative periods. The earliest album, Fat Albert Rotunda, features a fine sextet highlighted by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, like Hancock a master at maintaining strong rhythmic grooves while stretching outward. The later music, with a regularly working band, becomes increasingly expansive and exploratory. Like Miles Davis on Bitches Brew, Hancock was increasingly interested in layering rhythms and textures, emphasizing percussion, electric keyboards, and potent soloists, and broadening his palette of sounds to eventually include synthesizers.

Playing what was originally scheduled to be their final show of the tour, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band drop one of the best of 1978 at The Fox. No full recording of Atlanta 10/1/78, audience or otherwise, has ever been available. Newly mixed from Plangent Processed, multitrack masters, 10/1/78 is a previously unheard Darkness tour masterwork, from the show-opening cover of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" through the encore closer "Quarter To Three." In between, we're treated to "Heartbreak Hotel," "It's My Life," "Meeting Across The River," "For You," "Because The Night," "Point Blank," "Kitty's Back" and "Incident On 57th Street" across this go-out-with-a-bang, 24-song set.

We often cite the Reunion tour as a demarcation between the “classic” and “modern” Springsteen eras. Yet this April already marks 23 years since the start of the Reunion tour in Barcelona. Do the math, and the E Street Band’s return in 1999 is inching ever closer to being the midpoint of their overall career—a line to be reached in 2026, at which point it will have been 27 years from the start of Reunion; and Reunion itself was 27 years after the band formed in 1972. Time flies.

The December 13, 1992 Boston Garden show came in the midst of the Bruce Springsteen 1992–1993 World Tour, which saw The Boss hitting the road for the first time without the E Street Band (save for keyboardist Roy Bittan). Bruce had dissolved the band in 1989 and recorded the 1992 companion albums Human Touch and Lucky Town, of which the tour was in support, without his famed backing group.

As measured by cultural impact and mass popularity, Bruce Springsteen’s 1984-85 World Tour was the apex. Considering its stunning scale, playing multi-night stadium stands, it’s easy to forget that 1984 was a rebirth of sorts, the start of a new era as much as a continuation of what came before it. On the biggest tour of his career, Springsteen was rebuilding the engine while the plane was flying.
