The young, Vancouver guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina sought out Gary Peacock after a Keith Jarrett concert in San Francisco in 2000, and for the next five years Gary became his mentor and teacher. At their last meeting at Gary's house in upstate New York there was virtually no discussion, they just sessioned together for an hour or so, and the next day Gordon asked Gary if he would do a trio record. Gary agreed, and helped bring Paul Motian (another of Gordon's musical heroes) into the picture. Since 2014, the collective Grdina-Houle-Loewen has forged a new stream of complex compositions that meld together density, ferocious energy and technical virtuosity. The group's versatility and wide dynamic range has become finely honed, creating an ensemble that can change course dramatically. The group just spent some time at Afterlife Studios in July 2016, recording a set of quartet music with French pianist Benoît Delbecq, that been released by Songlines Records in the spring of 2017.

Though billed as a solo guitar album, Oddly Enough only fits that description in its periphery. On this new effort, Gordon Grdina employs electric, acoustic, and classical guitars, the oud, and a number of MIDI instruments to perform pieces written by saxophonist Tim Berne.

In the summer of 2004 Vancouver keyboardist Chris Gestrin spent three intense days in the studio on a Steinway D, recording in high resolution DSD with nine different duo and trio groupings of musicians from Vancouver’s vibrant music scene. Apart from a handful of compositions including a few solo piano pieces, all the music was completely improvised, exploring the process of spontaneous composition with concentration, finesse and expressive power. In the exposed settings on this 2007 release, success depended on sustaining the inspiration of the moment.
