Sweet In some ways, the Sweet epitomize all the tacky hubris and garish silliness of the early '70s. Fusing bubblegum melodies with crunchy, fuzzy guitars, they looked like a heavy metal band but were as tame as any pop group. It was a dichotomy that served them well as they racked up several hits in the U.K. and the U.S. The Sweet were smart enough to latch on to the British glam rock fad, building a safer, radio-friendly, teen-oriented version of Queen, T. Rex, and Gary Glitter. By the end of the '70s, the group's time at the top of the charts had expired, but their hit singles lived on not only as cultural artifacts but also as the predecessors for the pop-metal of the '80s. The band's competing incarnations, led by bassist Steve Priest and guitarist Andy Scott, continued to perform live and occasionally record into the early 2020s.

The J. Geils Band were one of the most popular touring rock & roll bands in America during the '70s. Where their contemporaries were influenced by the heavy boogie of British blues-rock and the ear-splitting sonic adventures of psychedelia, the J. Geils Band were a bar band pure and simple, churning out greasy covers of obscure R&B, doo wop, and soul tunes, cutting them with a healthy dose of Stonesy swagger. While their muscular sound and the hyper jive of frontman Peter Wolf packed arenas across America, it only rarely earned them hit singles. Seth Justman, the group's main songwriter, could turn out catchy R&B-based rockers like "Give It to Me" and "Must of Got Lost," but these hits never led to stardom, primarily because the group had trouble capturing the energy of its live sound in the studio. In the early '80s, the group tempered its driving rock with some pop, and the makeover paid off with the massive hit single "Centerfold," which stayed at number one for six weeks.

Celebrated violinists Maria Milstein and Mathieu van Bellen pair Béla Bartók’s 44 Duos for Two Violins with Luciano Berio’s 34 Duetti per Due Violini. Bartók’s miniature masterpieces have inspired and delighted countless young musicians. Although written for children, these duos are far from childlike: original harmonies, striking dissonances and lively rhythms are employed to create music with emotional depth, some being profoundly tragic, others fierce, lyrical, wild or fiery. Few works capture the vitality of folk music as vividly as these. Like Bartók, Berio composed his 'Duetti' as teaching pieces, dedicating each of the 34 duos to a friend, colleague or composer, beginning with Béla, an homage to Bartók. The pieces offer a kaleidoscope of styles, reflecting Berio’s personal connections with the dedicatees.

Ariel Kalma is a prolific composer, multi-instrumentalist, and global traveler whose work ranges from electronic experiments and minimalism to electro-acoustic, as well as ambient electronic and globally tinged new age music. Starting with the Terry Riley-inspired minimalism of his 1975 debut LP Le Temps des Moissons, he has released dozens of albums of creative, spiritually minded music, with several volumes of archival material surfacing later in his career.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Modern Talking's first album, singer Thomas Anders surprised fans of the eurodisco group with a very special project. The singer has musically reinterpreted and re-sung the first six Modern Talking studio albums. The most successful duo in German pop history has gone their separate ways since 2003, but the Modern Talking songs, to which they are still dancing around the world today, remain immortal.

King Crimson If there is one group that embodies progressive rock, it is King Crimson. Led by guitar/Mellotron virtuoso Robert Fripp, during its first five years of existence the band stretched both the language and structure of rock into realms of jazz and classical music, all the while avoiding pop and psychedelic sensibilities. The absence of mainstream compromises and the lack of an overt sense of humor ultimately doomed the group to nothing more than a large cult following, but it made their albums some of the most enduring and respectable of the prog rock era. King Crimson originally grew out of the remnants of an unsuccessful trio called Giles, Giles & Fripp.
