Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major WAB 105, was written in 1875–1876, with minor changes over the next two years. It came at a time of trouble and disillusion for the composer: a lawsuit, from which he was exonerated, and a reduction in salary. Dedicated to Karl von Stremayr, education minister in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the symphony has at times been nicknamed the "Tragic", the "Church of Faith" or the "Pizzicato"; Bruckner himself referred to it as the "Fantastic" without applying this or any other name formally.

One of the great urban blues/jazz singers of the post World War II period, Jimmy Witherspoon recorded prolifically until contracting throat cancer in the 1980s. This delightful set was laid down in a London studio in June 1981, before he fell ill, when he was still roaring like a lion. Three members of his backing combo - Peter King (sax), Mike Carr (keyboards) and Jim Mullen (guitar) - were top-flight British jazz musicians perfectly in tune with the singer's needs, while drummer Harold Smith was an American then living in Europe. They're joined by one of Spoon's contemporaries, tenor saxist Hal 'Cornbread' Singer, whose career path resembles the singer's in its fascinating R&B/Jazz duality.

Sarah McKenzie - pianist, vocalist and composer - is one of Australia's up-and-coming jazz musicians. She sings with the kind of phrasing that only a true jazz singer can come up with while her groove of the piano is the stuff that makes people want to play jazz. She is a musical marvel.

After the quartet adventures of "Currents" and "Post Scriptum", Wolfert Brederode returns to a piano trio setting, and "Black Ice" makes an apt metaphor for his new music, with its gleaming lyricism, transparency, and hint of danger. “I find the combination of danger and beauty intriguing”, he says. There is sleek melodic invention both from the leader and from Icelandic bassist Gulli Gudmundsson, and Jasper van Hulten proves to be a resourceful addition to the team, a tone-sensitive drummer adept at embellishing the sensitive musical language and sense of interplay.

Shigehiko Kawaguchi, who has won several awards, including the highest prize at the Bruges International Competition of Ancient Music (2016) and the second prize at the 1st Chopin International Competition of Period Instruments (2018), is active both in Japan and abroad as the hope of the Japanese keyboard instrument. The fourth release on his independent label is a remarkable piece using the mini-piano, an instrument that was born in Japan but is now rarely seen or even known. Unlike toy pianos, the mini-pianos that were originally made in Japan from the end of the Taisho era (1912-1926) to the first half of the Showa era (1926-1989) had a real stringed structure, but their unique mechanics required a lot of ingenuity and time and effort to produce, and their sales numbers did not grow as expected.

For her first album on Linn soprano Cassandra Wright has recorded a programme that offers a musical exploration of various facets of human nature. In the Twilight encompasses composers as varied as Barber, Joseph Marx, Debussy, Grieg and Korngold. In Cassandra’s own words, ‘Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, which was the initial inspiration for this collection of songs, evokes the innocence and wonder of childhood through its enchanting description of a carefree summer evening.

The Arcadia Quartet’s acclaimed survey of Weinberg’s String Quartets continues with this fourth volume containing Quartets Nos 6, 13, and 15. Quartet No. 6 was composed in 1946 in Bïkovo, a town some twenty miles from the south-eastern perimeter of Moscow. Weinberg dedicated it to his friend Georgiy Sviridov, whom he had met in Shostakovich’s circle. The Quartet is a summit of his early achievements, and its musical language is strikingly advanced in relation to traditional Soviet works in the genre. It was banned by the authorities, and as a result, Weinberg wrote no more quartets until after the death of his mentor Shostakovich, in 1975. String Quartet No. 13 was composed in 1977 and dedicated to the Borodin Quartet.

Pianist Charlotte Hu (formerly known as Ching-Yun Hu) presents Liszt: Metamorphosis, her debut album for PENTATONE. On it, Charlotte explores Hungarian composer and virtuoso pianist Franz Liszt’s chameleonic and evolving approach to composing – the metamorphosis of his music spanning from his early works inspired by Beethoven to the abstract tonality of his later works, as well as his incredible ability to transcribe and transform the music of other composers he admired.

Named after the 18th-century dance-style movement ‘Badinerie’, this beautiful new album from flautist Julien Beaudiment and harpist Marie Pierre Langlamet offers a diverse span of repertoire, with a rich collection of works from across the centuries.

Acclaimed pianist Joep Beving and Berlin-based producer and cellist Maarten Vos share their first collaborative album, 'vision of contentment', released via Nils Frahm’s LEITER label. It follows work together on 2019’s 'Henosis', Beving’s third album, which came about after the two musicians shared a bill in Amsterdam in 2018. Mixed by Frahm at LEITER studio in Berlin’s famed Funkhaus complex, where Vos also has his studio, the LP contains eight brand new compositions and is available on vinyl as well as via all digital platforms.

Unfortunately, the oboe quartet genre has never attained the status of the clarinet quintet in the public's favor. Yet it is no less appealing a combination, and in the 18th century in particular there was an abundance of quartets with oboe, of which only Mozart's virtuoso oboe quartet achieved fame. The oboist Emma Black and her colleagues set two pieces by Mozart's contemporaries alongside this famous work, which, not least thanks to the all-round convincing realization, arouse curiosity for further compositions in this instrumentation.
