Optimal Control Theory

Optimal Control Theory by Leonard D. Berkovitz
English | PDF | 1974 | 315 Pages | ISBN : 038790106X | 17.8 MB

This book is an introduction to the mathematical theory of optimal control of processes governed by ordinary differential eq- tions. It is intended for students and professionals in mathematics and in areas of application who want a broad, yet relatively deep, concise and coherent introduction to the subject and to its relati- ship with applications. In order to accommodate a range of mathema- cal interests and backgrounds among readers, the material is arranged so that the more advanced mathematical sections can be omitted wi- out loss of continuity. For readers primarily interested in appli- tions a recommended minimum course consists of Chapter I, the sections of Chapters II, III, and IV so recommended in the introductory sec tions of those chapters, and all of Chapter V.

English | PDF | 1974 | 346 Pages | ISBN : 0387901000 | 12.5 MB

This is a textbook for a one semester course on numerical analysis for senior undergraduate or beginning graduate students with no previous knowledge of the subject. The prerequisites are calculus, some knowledge of ordinary differential equations, and knowledge of computer programming using Fortran. Normally this should be half of a two semester course, the other semester covering numerical solution of linear systems, inversion of matrices and roots of polynomials. Neither semester should be a prerequisite for the other.

Perturbation Methods in Non-Linear Systems

Perturbation Methods in Non-Linear Systems by Georgio Eugenio Oscare Giacaglia
English | PDF | 1972 | 379 Pages | ISBN : 0387900543 | 18.6 MB

This volume is intended to provide a comprehensive treatment of recent developments in methods of perturbation for nonlinear systems of ordinary differ ential equations. In this respect, it appears to be a unique work. The main goal is to describe perturbation techniques, discuss their ad vantages and limitations and give some examples. The approach is founded on analytical and numerical methods of nonlinear mechanics. Attention has been given to the extension of methods to high orders of approximation, required now by the increased accuracy of measurements in all fields of science and technology. The main theorems relevant to each perturbation technique are outlined, but they only provide a foundation and are not the objective of these notes. Each chapter concludes with a detailed survey of the pertinent literature, supplemental information and more examples to complement the text, when necessary, for better comprehension. The references are intended to provide a guide for background information and for the reader who wishes to analyze any particular point in more detail. The main sources referenced are in the fields of differential equations, nonlinear oscillations and celestial mechanics. Thanks are due to Katherine MacDougall and Sandra Spinacci for their patience and competence in typing these notes. Partial support from the Mathematics Program of the Office of Naval Research is gratefully acknowledged.

Introduction to Calculus and Analysis: Volume I

Introduction to Calculus and Analysis: Volume I by Richard Courant , Fritz John
English | PDF | 1989 | 682 Pages | ISBN : N/A | 50.3 MB

From the Preface: (…) The book is addressed to students on various levels, to mathematicians, scientists, engineers. It does not pretend to make the subject easy by glossing over difficulties, but rather tries to help the genuinely interested reader by throwing light on the interconnections and purposes of the whole. Instead of obstructing the access to the wealth of facts by lengthy discussions of a fundamental nature we have sometimes postponed such discussions to appendices in the various chapters. Numerous examples and problems are given at the end of various chapters. Some are challenging, some are even difficult; most of them supplement the material in the text. In an additional pamphlet more problems and exercises of a routine character will be collected, and moreover, answers or hints for the solutions will be given. This first volume of concerned primarily with functions of a single variable, whereas the second volume will discuss the more ramified theories of calculus (…).

Partial Differential Equations III: Nonlinear Equations, Third Edition by Michael E. Taylor
English | PDF (True) | 2023 | 774 Pages | ISBN : 3031339274 | 10 MB

The third of three volumes on partial differential equations, this is devoted to nonlinear PDE. It treats a number of equations of classical continuum mechanics, including relativistic versions, as well as various equations arising in differential geometry, such as in the study of minimal surfaces, isometric imbedding, conformal deformation, harmonic maps, and prescribed Gauss curvature. In addition, some nonlinear diffusion problems are studied. It also introduces such analytical tools as the theory of L^p Sobolev spaces, Holder spaces, Hardy spaces, and Morrey spaces, and also a development of Calderon-Zygmund theory and paradifferential operator calculus. The book is targeted at graduate students in mathematics and at professional mathematicians with an interest in partial differential equations, mathematical physics, differential geometry, harmonic analysis, and complex analysis.

Algebra II: Noncommutative Rings Identities by A. I. Kostrikin, I. R. Shafarevich
English | PDF | 1991 | 241 Pages | ISBN : 3642729010 | 41.3 MB

The algebra of square matrices of size n ~ 2 over the field of complex numbers is, evidently, the best-known example of a non-commutative alge 1 bra • Subalgebras and subrings of this algebra (for example, the ring of n x n matrices with integral entries) arise naturally in many areas of mathemat ics. Historically however, the study of matrix algebras was preceded by the discovery of quatemions which, introduced in 1843 by Hamilton, found ap plications in the classical mechanics of the past century. Later it turned out that quaternion analysis had important applications in field theory. The al gebra of quaternions has become one of the classical mathematical objects; it is used, for instance, in algebra, geometry and topology.

Bifurcations in Flow Patterns: Some Applications of the Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations in Fluid Dynamics by P. G. Bakker
English | PDF | 1991 | 221 Pages | ISBN : 940105553X | 12.8 MB

The main idea of the present study is to demonstrate that the qualitative theory of diffe rential equations, when applied to problems in fluid-and gasdynamics, will contribute to the understanding of qualitative aspects of fluid flows, in particular those concerned with geometrical properties of flow fields such as shape and stability of its streamline patterns. It is obvious that insight into the qualitative structure of flow fields is of great importance and appears as an ultimate aim of flow research.

Inverse Problems in the Mathematical Sciences by Charles W. Groetsch
English | PDF | 1993 | 159 Pages | ISBN : 3322992047 | 11.5 MB

Classical applied mathematics is dominated by the Laplacian paradigm of known causes evolving continuously into uniquely determined effects. The classical direct problem is then to find the unique effect of a given cause by using the appropriate law of evolution. It is therefore no surprise that traditional teaching in mathema tics and the natural sciences emphasizes the point of view that problems have a solution, this solution is unique, and the solution is insensitive to small changes in the problem. Such problems are called well-posed and they typically arise from the so-called direct problems of natural science.

Language, Truth and Logic in Mathematics by Jaakko Hintikka
English | PDF | 1998 | 257 Pages | ISBN : 0792347668 | 26.8 MB

One can distinguish, roughly speaking, two different approaches to the philosophy of mathematics. On the one hand, some philosophers (and some mathematicians) take the nature and the results of mathematicians' activities as given, and go on to ask what philosophical morals one might perhaps find in their story. On the other hand, some philosophers, logicians and mathematicians have tried or are trying to subject the very concepts which mathematicians are using in their work to critical scrutiny. In practice this usually means scrutinizing the logical and linguistic tools mathematicians wield. Such scrutiny can scarcely help relying on philosophical ideas and principles. In other words it can scarcely help being literally a study of language, truth and logic in mathematics, albeit not necessarily in the spirit of AJ. Ayer.
