Osserman Manifolds in Semi-Riemannian Geometry

Osserman Manifolds in Semi-Riemannian Geometry by Eduardo García-Río , Demir N. Kupeli , Ramón Vázquez-Lorenzo
English | PDF | 2002| 178 Pages | ISBN : 3540431446 | 14.6 MB

The subject of this book is Osserman semi-Riemannian manifolds, and in particular, the Osserman conjecture in semi-Riemannian geometry. The treatment is pitched at the intermediate graduate level and requires some intermediate knowledge of differential geometry. The notation is mostly coordinate-free and the terminology is that of modern differential geometry. Known results toward the complete proof of Riemannian Osserman conjecture are given and the Osserman conjecture in Lorentzian geometry is proved completely. Counterexamples to the Osserman conjuncture in generic semi-Riemannian signature are provided and properties of semi-Riemannian Osserman manifolds are investigated.

Variational Principles in Physics From Classical to Quantum Realm by Tamás Sándor Biró
English | PDF,EPUB | 2023 | 121 Pages | ISBN : 3031278755 | 6.2 MB

This book is an English translation from a Hungarian book designed for graduate and postgraduate students about the use of variational principles in theoretical physics. Unlike many academic textbooks, it dashes across several lecture disciplines taught in physics courses. It emphasizes and demonstrates the use of the variational technique and philosophy behind the basic laws in mechanics, relativity theory, electromagnetism, and quantum mechanics. The book is meant for advanced students and young researchers in theoretical physics but, also, more experienced researchers can benefit from its reading.

Optical Polymer Waveguides: From the Design to the Final 3D-Opto Mechatronic Integrated Device by Jörg Franke, Ludger Overmeyer, Norbert Lindlein, Karlheinz Bock, Stefan Kaierle, Oliver Suttmann, Klaus-Jürgen Wolter
English | EPUB | 2022 | 283 Pages | ISBN : 3030928535 | 106.6 MB

Light signals in optical waveguides can be used to transmit very large amounts of data quickly and largely without interference. In the industrial and infrastructural sectors, e.g. in the automotive and aerospace industries, the demand to further exploit this potential is therefore increasing. Which technologies can be used to effectively integrate systems that transmit data by means of light into existing components? This is a central question for current research. So far, there have been some technical limitations in this regard. For example, it is difficult to couple the signal of an optical waveguide to other optical waveguides without interruption. There is also a lack of suitable fabrication technologies for three-dimensional waveguides, as well as design and simulation environments for 3D opto-MID. This book addresses these and other challenges.

Relativistic Electrodynamics and Differential Geometry

Relativistic Electrodynamics and Differential Geometry by Stephen Parrott
English | PDF | 1987 | 317 Pages | ISBN : 1461291135 | 38.8 MB

The aim of this book is to provide a short but complete exposition of the logical structure of classical relativistic electrodynamics written in the language and spirit of coordinate-free differential geometry. The intended audience is primarily mathematicians who want a bare-bones account of the foundations of electrodynamics written in language with which they are familiar and secondarily physicists who may be curious how their old friend looks in the new clothes of the differential-geometric viewpoint which in recent years has become an important language and tool for theoretical physics.

Jean-Pierre Vigier continually labeled one of les heretiques de la science, l’eternel resistant et le patriarche is yet a pillar of modern physics and mathematics, with one leg firmly planted in theory and the other in empiricism spanning a career of nearly 60 years with a publication vitae quickly approaching 400! He wrote of his mentor Louis de Broglie “Great physicists fight great battles”, which perhaps applies even more so to 1 Jean-Pierre Vigier himself.

Cosmology, Quantum Vacuum and Zeta Functions: In Honor of Emilio Elizalde by Sergey D. Odintsov, Diego Sáez-Gómez, Sebastian Xambó-Descamps
English | PDF (True) | 2011 | 379 Pages | ISBN : 3642197590 | 7.95 MB

Some major developments of physics in the last three decades are addressed by highly qualified specialists in different specific fields. They include renormalization problems in QFT, vacuum energy fluctuations and the Casimir effect in different configurations, and a wealth of applications. A number of closely related issues are also considered. The cosmological applications of these theories play a crucial role and are at the very heart of the book; in particular, the possibility to explain in a unified way the whole history of the evolution of the Universe: from primordial inflation to the present day accelerated expansion. Further, a description of the mathematical background underlying many of the physical theories considered above is provided. This includes the uses of zeta functions in physics, as in the regularization problems in QFT already mentioned, specifically in curved space-time, and in Casimir problems as.

Data Analysis in Cosmology by Vicent J. Martinez, Enn Saar, Enrique Martinez Gonzales, Maria Jesus Pons-Borderia
English | PDF (True) | 2009 | 636 Pages | ISBN : 3540239723 | 17.15 MB

The amount of cosmological data has dramatically increased in the past decades due to an unprecedented development of telescopes, detectors and satellites. Efficiently handling and analysing new data of the order of terabytes per day requires not only computer power to be processed but also the development of sophisticated algorithms and pipelines.
Aiming at students and researchers the lecture notes in this volume explain in pedagogical manner the best techniques used to extract information from cosmological data, as well as reliable methods that should help us improve our view of the universe.

This volume is based on the lectures given at the First Inter University Graduate School on Gravitation and Cosmology organized by IUCAA, Pune, in 1989. This series of Schools have been carefully planned to provide a sound background and preparation for students embarking on research in these and related topics. Consequently, the contents of these lectures have been meticulously selected and arranged. The topics in the present volume offer a firm mathematical foundation for a number of subjects to be de veloped later. These include Geometrical Methods for Physics, Quantum Field Theory Methods and Relativistic Cosmology.

Peter Gabriel Bergmann started his work on general relativity in 1936 when he moved from Prague to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Bergmann collaborated with Einstein in an attempt to provide a geometrical unified field theory of gravitation and electromagnetism. Within this program they wrote two articles together: A. Einstein and P. G. Bergmann, Ann. Math. 39, 685 (1938) ; and A. Einstein, V. Bargmann and P. G. Bergmann, Th. von Karman Anniversary Volume 212 (1941).
