~ Dave Brubeck 1995-05-15 Vienna Konzerthaus ~

Big hits from the repertoire of jazz icon Dave Brubeck, from "Take Five" to "Unsquare Dance", played by the master himself in the best music-making mood on the piano and his long-time comrades-in-arms Bill Smith (clarinet), Jack Six (double bass) and Randy Jones (drums). ): The concert of the Brubeck Quartet on May 15, 1995 in the Vienna Konzerthaus fulfilled the expectations of the fans, who had come in droves. And who were surprised that evening by the freshness and immediacy with which the pieces that had been known for decades were celebrated.

"Take Five" from 1959, the greatest success of the "classic" Dave Brubeck Quartet, penned by Paul Desmond, and which still reaches its mass audience today despite (or because of) the unusual 5/4 time signature, sounded in the Great Hall of the Konzerthaus , as if the composition were new to the program. But that wasn't the only special feature of the evening: as an encore, the audience expected Brubeck's reunion in concert with baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan.

On the occasion of Dave Brubeck's 100th birthday, which would have been celebrated on December 6, 2020, this excellently recorded concert recording was brought out of the archive.
