The Lonelinesses of Modernity: A Theory of Modernization as an Age of Isolation by Denis Newiak
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 250 Pages | ISBN : 3658401435 | 2.3 MB

Modernity presents itself as an age of increasing social disintegration: secularization and rationalization, urbanization and globalization, individualization and digitalization make it difficult for communities today. Modernity comes with desirable promises that make it attractive, but it does not come free: Its price is escalating modern loneliness. Denis Newiak tells a cultural history of modernization that, from industrialization to the late-modern network society, produces ever new and harsher experiences of loneliness.

Norms and Standards for Language Resources Protection in China by Center for the Protection and Research of Language Resources of China at Beijing Language and Culture University
English | PDF (True) | 2024 | 193 Pages | ISBN : 9819999669 | 8.5 MB

At present, China is home to some of the world’s richest language resources. However, in the course of globalization and urbanization, many dialects and dialect cultures are now in danger of being irretrievably lost. The PPLRC was launched in 2015 and has since produced the world’s largest language resources database (zhongguoyuyan.cn). Against this backdrop, the international conference on “Role of Linguistic Diversity in Building a Global Community with Shared Future: Protection, Access and Promotion to Global Language Resources” was jointly held by the Chinese Government and the UNESCO in 2018. During the conference, “Protection and Promotion of Linguistic Diversity of the World: Yuelu Proclamation” was adopted.

Fragile Heritage in Chinese Ruralities: Enacting Architectural Tools to Valorize Historical Palimpsests by Gerardo Semprebon
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 248 Pages | ISBN : 3031775163 | 193.3 MB

This book explores the concept of fragile heritage as an architectural legacy and a territorial resource in rural China, emphasizing the significance in safeguarding its unique cultural trajectory, and laying the groundwork for future developments. Chinese rural buildings and settlements encapsulate priceless cultural values, but become increasingly vulnerable, under increasing pressures. Socioeconomic transitions, climate change, political agendas, land rent speculation, awakenings, and commodifications of cultural values, redefine the conceptual and operational framework of countryside transformation, and contribute to the debate on contemporary architectural and urban design. In this context, rural authenticity emerges as a crucial value in architectural morpho-typology, construction techniques, and expressive codes.

New Engagement Strategies for Energy Justice: Perspectives from the Next Generation by Alicia Phillips, Laura Kaschny
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 193 Pages | ISBN : 3031745183 | 6.6 MB

This book offers an innovative exploration of energy justice, from concept to action, highlighting its role as a crucial tool for navigating the complexities of a just and sustainable energy transition. The book is timely and as the global energy transition rapidly progresses, it will serve as an essential resource, offering practical guidance to advancing a just and sustainable energy future. The perspectives presented in this book are presented by early career energy justice scholars from around the world, each highlighting and proposing ways to navigate the transition. The discussion focuses on three key themes: the integration and repurposing of energy infrastructures with the use of technology, the need for affordable and accessible energy services, and the promotion of responsible governance through effective policymaking and corporate social responsibility. At the heart of this book is the presentation of the ‘Toolkit to Achieve the Just Transition using the Energy Justice Framework’.

Strong Light–Matter Interactions in Extreme Plasmonic and Mie-Resonant Systems by P. Elli Stamatopoulou
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 192 Pages | ISBN : 3031679067 | 33 MB

Collective excitations in matter, either in the form of plasmons in metals or Mie resonances in high-index dielectrics, constitute fundamental building blocks for photonic applications, including optical and quantum communications, biosensing, and polaritonic chemistry. Motivated by these prospects, this book explores excitations sustained in metallic and dielectric nanocavities and their interaction with light, quantum emitters, and swift electrons.

Governance of Human Gene Editing and Transhumanism: Tasks for Today’s Bioethics by Lílian Santos
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 203 Pages | ISBN : 3031708628 | 6.4 MB

This book focuses on the implications of the common themes and works on three urgent tasks for bioethicists. Are there common themes between transhumanism and the WHO framework for global governance of human genome editing? If yes, what are the implications of that? To find possible common themes, the author applied the reflective thematic analysis (RTA) method to a set of texts on transhumanism and a set of texts on the global governance of human genome editing. The transhumanist texts were the three documents Humanity+, the former World Transhumanist Association, calls the “original documents on transhumanism” (the Transhumanist Declaration, Transhumanist FAQ 3.0, the Transhumanist Manifesto v.4). The selected texts to represent the current global governance of human genome editing were the three documents published by WHO on the topic in 2021 (human genome editing: a framework for governance, human genome editing: recommendations, human genome editing: position paper): the only plan for the global governance of HGE to date. As a result of his application of the RTA method, he found three common themes.

The world is in crisis at every level: the planet, humanity, and all kinds of human communities, including working communities. The result is likely to be violence and chaos. And yet, man lives and can only live with others. Relationships in all their forms therefore need to be developed with a view to building a common future.

Wetland Restoration for Endangered Species Recovery: A Multidisciplinary Case Study of Big Meadow Bog, Brier Island, Nova Scotia by Nicholas M. Hill, Sarah Hines, Nelson J. O'Driscoll
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 360 Pages | ISBN : 3031713435 | 97.2 MB

This book provides an overview of the history of this site and the complex effects of the hydrological and ecological changes through the landscape changes, vegetation adaptation, biovector contamination, and ultimately habitat restoration. Big Meadow Bog (Brier Island, Nova Scotia, Canada) is a wetland ecosystem with a history of human disturbance. It was ditched for small-scale blueberry production in the 1950s, which significantly altered the hydrology of the system and resulted in vegetation changes and colonization by 3000+ pairs of herring gulls by the 1980s. It is also host to the endangered plant species Eastern Mountain Avens which was the impetus for restoration of the site. This book provides the background to the restoration decisions, the monitoring and science post-restoration and the lessons learned from the science and through collaboration with government and community.

Phenology: An Integrative Environmental Science, Thied Edition by Mark D. Schwartz
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 639 Pages | ISBN : 3031750268 | 111.7 MB

Phenology refers to recurring plant and animal life cycle stages, such as leafing and flowering, maturation of agricultural plants, emergence of insects, and migration of birds. It is also the study of these recurring events, especially their timing and relationships with weather and climate. Phenological phenomena all give a ready measure of the environment as viewed by the associated organism and are thus ideal indicators of the impact of local and global changes in weather and climate on the earth’s biosphere.
