This is the first recording on Channel Classics with the Italian based MIB Ensemble. Compromising the best players from the top orchestras of Italy, the ensemble felt the need to create their own ensemble to fill the gap in repertoire and concert possibilities for wind instruments. The two major early composers having written for winds would indeed be Mozart and Beethoven so there is no better fitting pieces than two octets combined with the RondinoSerenade's first movement is anything but street music - no friendly and polite little piece of entertainment, but a serious, sometimes threatening eight-part wind music full of chromaticism, dramatic leaps and definitely unfestive dissonances. The Octet of Beethoven also has the classical four-movement structure but wrote the piece as an official concert piece.

Anthony Roth Costanzo and Justin Vivian Bond each sound different from what you would expect when you look at them. The juxtaposition of their voices, personalities, and repertoire subverts notions of high and low, be it in terms of pitch, cultural echelon, or degrees of camp – not to mention the difference in height. By expressing their queer identities through unique interpretations of classical music, pop music, and points of intersection between the two, the music becomes a prismatic reflection of outsiders who might otherwise be intimidated by the bulwark that the classical world can present. There is humor in the clashing of styles, pathos in the depth of expression, and a kind of galvanizing joy in the harmony of purpose. Whether invoking mythology or nature, romance or radical compassion, they carve new pathways between classical tradition and politically subversive cabaret, and allow old works to reveal surprising new stories.

Elsa Dreisig credits Mozart with being the composer who first inspired her to become a professional singer. Now the French-Danish soprano pays him tribute with an album devoted entirely to arias from his operas. Its title, Mozart x 3, reflects a programme constructed around the three masterpieces composed to libretti written by Lorenzo Da Ponte: Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte. Elsa Dreisig sings arias allocated to three different characters in each of these operas. The total of nine ‘Da Ponte arias’ is complemented by three arias from examples of the dignified genre opera seria: La clemenza di Tito, Idomeneo and Lucio Silla. Accompanying Elsa Dreisig is the Kammerorchester Basel, conducted by Louis Langrée, now director of Paris’s celebrated Opéra-Comique.

This music will take you into a sphere that is interwoven with emotions and infatuating melodies. Inspired by composers like Ennio Morricone, John Barry or Michel Legrand, I found the artistic power to create this album. The musical themes arose from different narratives and combine gentleness and melancholy with strength and energy. This new and unique recording was made possible through the successful collaboration with the Ensemble Symphonique de Paris under the direction of conductor Carlos Dourthé. The recording for this album was made in late 2019 with the Ensemble Symphonique de Paris, consisting of musicians from the Orchestre National de France as well as musicians from the Orchestra of the University of Paris, conducted by Carlos Dourthé. Patrice Muzard's works are currently performed regularly both in France and internationally in prestigious concert halls.

After years and years spent playing solo and chamber music of all kinds, and touching the greatest composers (among whom Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov) as well as instrumental rarities by Puccini, Leoncavallo, Mascagni, Rossini, Offenbach, the occasion arises for recovering some short piano pages of my own. They had been created on the spur of the moment, frequently connected with particular occasions and emotions provoked by events, places, encounters… They are almost in the style of the “Péchés de Vieillesse”, to whom – as happened to my great compatriot Gioachino Rossini – the most intimate confidences are secretly entrusted. They also express my wish to let something personal and deep surface, something ripened thanks to my assiduous dedication to their great repertoire. Their references are at times obvious and not hidden, but also filtered through the sensitivity of a pianist-performer who writes, after all, for an audience of friends, recounting his life to them.

On March 11th, 1829, a barely twenty-years old Felix Mendelssohn conducted the performance of the St. Matthew Passion at the Berlin Singakademie.
