Jefferson Airplane - Flight Log 1966-1976 (1977/2011)

This odds and sods collection of the Jefferson Airplane gives an eclectic overview of one of the premier San Francisco bands. Although several of their better-known songs are included ("White Rabbit," "Volunteers"), the purpose of Flight Log seems to be to tell the story of the original JA lineup rather than present their greatest hits. The first half of the record documents the group together, the second half the group apart. A live version of "Somebody to Love" rides the sonic punch of Kaukonen and Cassady; Marty Balin's "Comin' Back to Me" remains one of the Airplane's finest ballads. The initial Hot Tuna recordings are also represented here along with tracks from the Blows Against the Empire assemblage. The inclusion of Jefferson Starship's "Ride the Tiger points the way to a slicker, pop-oriented future. While Flight Log is not essential, it may certainly be of interest to devout fans of the Jefferson Airplane.

This compilation chronicles the history of Jefferson Airplane/Starship as seen on the VH1 Behind the Music series. This is the first CD to encapsulate the band as it morphed between its three phases with the only consistency being the vocals of Grace Slick. These 18 tracks start with 1967's summer of love anthems "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," then move into the decadent '70s haze of "Miracles" and "With Your Love," and conclude with the '80s glossy pop/ballads "We Built This City," "Sara," and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Fans of one particular incarnation of the band may find parts of this nauseating or outdated, depending on where they stand. For better or worse, the band constantly evolved throughout three decades, unlike other mega superstar groups that gained prominence at the same time.

On August 13, 1965, Jefferson Airplane made their debut at the Matrix in San Francisco, and the club, founded by Airplane singer Marty Balin, was also having its opening that night. Two and a half years later, on February 1, 1968, Jefferson Airplane returned to the Matrix to play a show. By then, the group (three of whose six members had been replaced along the way) was a national success with a gold second album, Surrealistic Pillow, and two Top Ten singles, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit."

This was the first serious effort to assemble the best and most interesting of the Jefferson Airplane's work from beginning to end. At the time, the group's catalog on CD was in a woeful state of disrepair, hastily mastered from LP production sources and sounding worse than original vinyl copies of many of the titles, and there was no comprehensive anthology,

Bodacious DF is a 1973 rock album, the only release by the short-lived band of the same name. After leaving Jefferson Airplane in 1971, founder Marty Balin produced an album by the band Grootna in 1972. He then formed the band Bodacious DF with Grootna members Vic Smith and Greg Dewey (also from Country Joe & the Fish), as well as Mark Ryan (from Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Charlie Hickox.

The seminal San Francisco psychedelic band in the heyday of such things, Jefferson Airplane were sassy, political, and generally engaging. The band then morphed into Jefferson Starship, which was a whole other thing, a more polished band aiming at the pop charts. Eventually Jefferson Starship became just Starship, although the sound stayed aimed at the charts. This two-disc set combines the best tracks from all of these incarnations, which is a good thing if one is a fan of all of the approaches here, but not such a good thing if, like many, one prefers one version of the band to the other two.

The Airplane and the Dead reaped maximum exposure in the press and on radio and TV during their 1967 Canadian visit. Their free performance at Toronto City Hall Square a week prior to their O‘Keefe concerts (July 31-5 August) would draw crowds estimated at from 10,000 to 40,000, figures exceeded only by the wordage covering the event in the three daily papers. While the press scratched their heads and scrambled to comprehend this new form of youthful rebellion, this was undoubtedly a peak period for Jefferson Airplane, who had found momentum and international fame after the addition of former Great Society singer Grace Slick. Media coverage had catapulted Somebody To Love and White Rabbit into the psychedelic heavens. While Monterey was behind them (by about 2 months), Airplane were on a commercial roll when they appeared in Canada to serve up highlights from the first 3 albums and more. Timeline revisits this historic performance from one of the most iconic bands in the psychedelic era.

Jefferson Airplane's first live album demonstrated the group's development as concert performers, taking a number of songs that had been performed in concise, pop-oriented versions on their early albums - "3/5's of a Mile in 10 Seconds," "Somebody to Love," "It's No Secret," "Plastic Fantastic Lover" - and rendering them in arrangements that were longer, harder rocking, and more densely textured, especially in terms of the guitar and basslines constructed by Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady. The group's three-part vocal harmonizing and dueling was on display during such songs as a nearly seven-minute version of Fred Neil's folk-blues standard "The Other Side of This Life," here transformed into a swirling rocker…

The debut Jefferson Airplane album was dominated by singer Marty Balin, who wrote or co-wrote all the original material and sang most of the lead vocals in his heartbreaking tenor with Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson providing harmonies and backup. (Anderson's lead vocal on "Chauffeur Blues" indicated she was at least the equal of her successor, Grace Slick, as a belter.) The music consisted mostly of folk-rock love songs, the most memorable of which were "It's No Secret" and "Come up the Years." (There was also a striking version of Dino Valente's "Get Together" recorded years before the Youngbloods' hit version.) Jorma Kaukonen already displayed a talent for mixing country, folk, and blues riffs in a rock context, and Jack Casady already had a distinctive bass sound…

Bark, Jefferson Airplane's seventh album, was an album of firsts: it was the first Airplane album in almost two years, the first made after the arrival of violinist Papa John Creach and the departure of band founder Marty Balin, and the first to be released on the group's own Grunt Records label. It was also the first Airplane album made after the onset of that familiar rock group disease, solo career-itis. Rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner had released his Blows Against the Empire, and Hot Tuna, the band formed by lead guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady, had released two albums since the last Airplane group release, Volunteers. Bark, perhaps as a result, was not so much a group record as a bunch of songs made by alternating solo artists with backup by the other group members…

Forrest Gump (1994) is one of the most successful films ever made, winning Tom Hanks his second successive Best Actor Oscar (he won the previous year for Philadelphia) as well as claiming the Best Picture Oscar and many other awards and nominations, including several for music. A unique fable of American life from the 1950s to the 80s, the film blends comedy, drama, war, romance and groundbreaking special effects into a social and political portrait of the passing years, all seen through the eyes of the intellectually challenged but immensely likeable Forrest Gump. The soundtrack is a double album featuring 31 classic pop tunes plus a suite from Alan Silvestri's rich orchestral music, represented more completely on the companion score album.

The triple CD (or cassette) box set Jefferson Airplane Loves You came out at a time when major record labels were rushing out deluxe sets of about every meaningful artist of the '60s and '70s. Most of those sets hid self-indulgent, inflated "best of" collections of previously released material with a couple of alternate mixes and live tracks to lure in the fans. Loves You has some general appeal (although slimmer "best of" collections are available and cater better to the casual listener who wants to hear "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love"), but it is clearly aimed at the fan. Disc 1 covers the early years up to the group's second LP Surrealistic Pillow.

Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock. Formed in 1965, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They were headliners at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), Altamont Free Concert (1969), and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England. Their 1967 break-out album Surrealistic Pillow ranks on the short list of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love. Two songs from that album, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
