What a treat to have a first solo album from Philippe Pierlot, the Belgian viola da gamba player best known for being the director of the Ricercar Ensemble, and what a double treat for it then to sound so absolutely ravishing.

The Dutch don't treat their composers very well. Many years ago Dutch and Belgian radio started a project about Carolus Hacquart, but although a number of his works were recorded, very few of them ever made it to disc, and since things have remained quiet around this composer. There is no reason to ignore him as his music is of very good quality; something the present disc goes to prove. It seems Hacquart was born around 1643 in Brughes and received his first musical education as a choirboy there and later in Ghent. He studied viola da gamba and organ and moved to the United Dutch Provinces, first to Rotterdam, where he worked as a freelance musician and music teacher.

Jeffrey Thompson’s first CD for Flora is all about a life’s journey through time, emotions, and memories. The tenor gives us a fantastic spectrum of his vocal and dramatic capacities, painting with extreme variety the depths of human feelings or on the contrary lightness of pure joy and folly… as we can find only in English baroque poetry, on music by John Blow, Jeremiah Clarke, Nicholas Lanier and Henry Purcell (such as the famous “Here, let my Life”).Accompanied by his beloved continuo players Daniel Zapico on the baroque guitar and theorbo, and Philippe Pierlot on the viola da gamba, a must have for your dark winter eve’s.

Buxtehude’s Opus 1 and 2 Sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord belie the composer’s common image as austere and sober. They instead delight the listener with what Johann Mattheson, writing in 1739, called their « unfamilar progressions, hidden ornamentation, and ingenious colourations ». It comes as no surprise to learn that the sonatas were a great success when they were first published in Germany in the 1690s, in the midst of the fashion for the ‘stylus fantasticus’ (described by Athanasius Kircher in 1650 as “…especially suited to instruments. It is the most free and unrestrained method of composing, it is bound to nothing, neither to any words nor to a melodic subject. It was instituted to display genius, and to teach the hidden design of harmony and the ingenious composition of harmonic phrases and fugues.")
