Trailblazing instrumental synth pop experiments created to soundtrack Japan’s booming 1980s cartoon and comic industries. The brightly futuristic instrumentals on this collection reflect the mindset of composers and musicians who believed in a technological future where everything was possible. In the late 1980s Japan experienced a brief but heady period where societal changes combined with new-found wealth to open up a world of possibilities. A huge influx of cash - artificially created by slashed interest rates after an agreement with the US to weaken the dollar relative to the yen - resulted in the inflation of real estate and stock market at a rapid pace. While the economic bubble it created was unprecedented and impossible to sustain, for a while money was in plentiful supply. The musical genre City Pop reflected the aspirations of the country’s booming leisure class. Video games flourished with Nintendo's 1983 launch of their Family Computer (or FamiCom). Studio Ghibli was founded 1985 to later became one of the most famous and respected animation studios in the world, and Anime and Manga were established as major forms of entertainment for all generations of the Japanese public.

MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 535 MB
3:52:50 | New Wave, Synth-pop, Acid House, House, Techno, Pop Rock, EBM, Balearic | Label: Cocoon Recordings

For this uniquely personal retrospective spread over twelve vinyl discs, Sven Väth takes us back to the early days of his DJ career. On What I Used To Play we meet great pioneers of electronic music, gifted percussionists, obscure wave bands, and innovative producers of a bygone ‘new electronic’ era. Rough beats and irresistible grooves from the identification stage of house, techno, and acid remind us not just how far electronic music has evolved over the past four decades, but how great it was to dance to EBM, techno, and house for the very first time.

Spread over two CDs, Hard To Find is a brand new compilation series bringing together great and lost remixes from old 12" vinyl collections and CD singles (remember them?) gone by, that are…well…hard to find. If you consider yourself a trainspotter or a lover of quality music then this series is most definitely for you. DJ historian and journalist extraordinaire Bill Brewster writes the sleeve notes for the release and explains the concept behind the album
"With Hard To Find, we've sent our vinyl archaeologists to sift through the wreckage of acid house, throwing aside the Alison Limerick double packs and long-forgotten Shamen promos to bring you the gold (the only fool's gold we'd permit would be by Stone Roses). But not only are these the very best of the remixes from the most creative period of house music, we like to think they define it, too. As if that weren't sufficient, many of them have never been made available on CD before."

Before he released 8 and 9 as two separate vinyl albums, Prins Thomas opined that it marked his best work to date. Gathered here for the first time on a single CD, it's hard to quibble with his assessment. For starters, the collected tracks arguably offer the strongest fusion yet of the various musical threads that have long been present in his work - think sun-soaked Balearica, synthesizer-driven krautrock, dub disco, punk-funk, cosmic rock, loose-limbed grooves and wide-eyed, sunrise-ready electronic psychedelia. Highlights include the acoustic-meets-acid wonder of 'Cala Lunga', the sun-bright, slowly rising rush of 'Evig Ung', the rubbery and cosmic chug of 'Earthbound' and the heavily electronic bliss of 'I Love U'.
