Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992) revolutionized traditional tango by creating Tango Nuevo, a genre that fused traditional Argentine sounds with elements of jazz, classical music, and even rock. His compositions shifted tango from the dance halls to the concert stage, emphasizing intricate harmonies and intense emotion. While the album is a 2026 compilation, it consists of original recordings where Piazzolla plays his signature instrument, the bandoneón. These tracks are digitally remastered to take advantage of Qobuz's Hi-Res audio formats. The distinct, breathy, and percussive sound of the lead instrument is Piazzolla himself. Most of these recordings feature his famous Quinteto Tango Nuevo, including legendary collaborators like Fernando Suárez Paz (violin) and Pablo Ziegler (piano).

Yo-Yo Ma might seem like an unlikely protagonist for the tango, but this intrepid musical explorer has taken his task seriously, collaborating with experienced tango musicians. Ma even participates in a posthumous collaboration with one 1987 Piazzolla recording. Furthermore, while he's obviously the headliner here, he doesn't dominate the arrangements nearly as much as he does the billing and photography of the disc. While the result isn't your essential Piazzolla album (that would have to include more of the composer's own playing), it's an atmospheric and convincing collection, perhaps a good introduction for those who don't know the music.

The disc features Antonio Vivaldi's seminal work, The Four Seasons, which is the top-selling classical work of all time, paired with The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Astor Piazzola's tribute to Vivaldi. There is tremendous interest in this orchestra, and this is the first time it has recorded with the Ancalagon label following successful recordings with the Deutsche Grammophon label.
